Common Information
- Chain of command should be followed at all times, if possible. The chief, assistant chiefs, captains, and lieutenants have been elected by the members of the department to lead and guide the department.
- Firefighters who have not completed the basic firefighter course and/or less than one year experience on the department will be expected to ride on Truck No.5 to the scene of the call, unless otherwise instructed.
- Firefighters with less than one year experience on the department are not allowed to drive fire apparatus to the scene of the call. Special circumstances may require foregoing this line.
- It is of the utmost importance to follow through with any orders given to a firefighter at the fire scene. If it is not possible to carry through a command, the officer that gave the initial order must be notified immediately.
- Support from your family and employer is essential due to the commitment it takes to become a member of the St. James Fire Department.
- The city will provide biannual physicals to active members of the St. James Fire Department, but the initial physical to join the St. James Fire Department will be paid for by the applicant.
