Expectations
Read about the expectations for members of the Fire Department:
- A basic fire fighter class NFPA 1001 is required so that the new fire fighter can work safely and effectively at the fire scene. It is offered through the local technical college once a year, usually during the winter months. It is normally divided into two evening sessions a week, four hours in length, and is held until the course is completed (approximately 124 hours). The cost of the course is paid for by the City of St. James. If city vehicle is available it may be used. Otherwise you must use your own transportation.
- A minimum attendance of 60% of meetings and 40% of fires is required annually. Members are encouraged to attend all meetings and every fire when available rather than just maintaining a minimum attendance.
- There are two regular meetings a month, usually held at 7:00 pm on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month. No regular meetings are held in December.
