1. How do I contact a city department?

Visit the Staff Directory to find all department and staff contact information.

2. How do I register to vote?

Voter Registration Applications are available at the Watonwan County Auditors Office. Applications are also available at your local post office, school district office and libraries.

You can also register to vote when applying for or renewing your drivers license. The information will be forwarded to Watonwan County for processing.

Preregistration closes 20 days prior to an election.

3. Who do I call if I am out of power (no electrical service)?

Call City Hall at 507-375-3241 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday. After hours, call 507-375-3121, and an employee will be dispatched to your location.

4. How do I get ahold of Animal Control/the Dog Catcher?

During normal City Hall business hours, call City Hall at 507-375-3241. After hours call the Law Enforcement Center at 507-375-3121.

5. What is the quality of our drinking water?

The City of St. James prepares an annual report called Consumer Confidence Report (CCR). This report is a detailed summary of our drinking water quality. The CCR is published in the local Shopper Guide every June. Copies are available at City Hall at no cost (in both English and Spanish) or can be requested by calling City Hall at 507-375-3241. 6. When do I need a building permit?

Building permits, governed under the MN Building Code, are required for any owner or contractor who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish, or change the occupancy/use of a building or structure. A permit is also required to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair, remove, convert, or replace any gas, mechanical, electrical, plumbing system, shingles, siding or other equipment when the installation is regulated by the code.

A person wanting to do such work shall make application to the building official and obtain a permit prior to the beginning of any construction activity. Questions about whether or not a permit is required should contact the Building Official.
