1. When do I need to get a license for my pet?

All dogs in the City of St. James are required to have a license by the time they are three months old, at the time they usually get their rabies shot. Lifetime Dog license Fee: $25.

2. What if I lose a tag?

If you lose the city license tag, you can get a duplicate from City Hall for $5.00 (for issuance). You must present a copy of the original receipt for the current year.

3. What do I need and where can I get the license?

In order to obtain a dog license, dog owners must fill out an application at City Hall and must obtain a certificate by a veterinarian that is duly licensed to practice veterinary medicine within the State of Minnesota. This certificate shall state the animal for which the application for a license is made and that the animal has been inoculated against rabies for at least the period for which license is applied. The applicant will be issued a small license tag that is to be attached to the animal’s collar.

4. How long is the license good for?

All dog licenses are lifetime of the dog.

5. What animal control requirements are there in the City of St. James?

All animals must be on a leash or otherwise under the control of an accompanying person at all times. Either the owner, present or not, or a person in charge, must keep the animal under control.

6. Is there a dangerous animal policy in the City of St. James?

Yes, the City of St. James has adopted a dangerous dog ordinance. You can read it in Ordinance 91.37 of the City Code.

7. Is there a limit on the number of animals a person can have?

Yes, you can keep no more than three dogs or cats or a combination thereof over six months of age unless a person has a valid kennel license issued from the City of St. James.
